Professional standards body AIQS provides delegates with interpreting at high-profile conference

The Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (AIQS) is a professional standards body which ensures practising Quantity Surveyors are dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of professional excellence. AIQS hosted the joint 11th International Cost Engineering Council (ICEC) World Congress and the 22nd Annual Pacific Association of Quantity Surveyors (PAQS) Conference from 18 – 20 November 2018 at the International Convention Centre Sydney (ICC Sydney). The event attracted 476 local and international participants from a variety of professions.

"The interpretation service ensured delegates remained engaged throughout the conference."

- Lani Kirby, Education & Events Manager, AIQS

The Challenge

The world congress sees some of the industry's leading figureheads provide in-depth and highly technical presentations. With few local interpreters from English to Cantonese with the area, the AIQS events team needed to look further afield when contemplating a traditional set-up with interpreters working onsite. Furthermore, the event would see a number of concurrent sessions taking place in different break-out rooms. The team was keen to provide interpreting across all of theses sessions, but it soon became clear this would not be possible as interpreting booths would need to be installed in each meeting room. With 25% of attendees coming from China, the AIQS events team was determined to identify a solution, but cost, floorspace and administration were all key restraints.

The Approach

Interprefy was approached by AIQS in January 2018. Interprefy's sales team spent several months discussing the specific requirements and set-up of the congress. Interprefy worked hand-in-hand with its strategic partner, Congress Rental Network Australia, the region's leading supplier of simultaneous interpretation equipment, to ensure that everything would be in place during the three-day event.

The Outcome

The feedback from delegates was entirely positive. Simultaneous interpreting audio streaming was accessible through the Interprefy app, making for a user-friendly interpreting solution. It also meant that the customer only needed to pay for the number of live users, instead of providing radio headsets every single delegate at significant expense.

"When gathering feedback from the users, they indicated the service was good, that the interpreters were able to understand and translate the technical terms and that the service was easy to use."

- Lani Kirby, Education & Events Manager, AIQS
