Akamai implements remote simultaneous interpreting in four languages with just two weeks notice and benefits from 30% cost-savings


Akamai is an American content delivery network and cloud service provider headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in the United States. Akamai's content delivery network is one of the world's largest distributed computing platforms, responsible for serving between 15% and 30% of all web traffic.

The company, which operates a network of servers around the world, required simultaneous interpreting in multiple languages for a large-scale event.

The Challenge

Yap Xin Hong, Training Specialist at Akamai, was referred to Interprefy after seeking out a premium and flexible solution for simultaneous interpreting. With just two weeks to go until the event, the events team at Akamai were determined to find a provider. However, traditional vendors were prohibitively expensive due to the complexity of having interpreters onsite. With four languages required, Yap Xin Hong and his team would have needed to hire four interpreter booths, pushing up their budget significantly.

The Approach

Working within a tight deadline, Interprefy rapidly identified suitable interpreters for the event with the right language skills and appropriate knowledge of the subject matter. Working with its international network of language service providers, Interprefy was able to gather a much wider pool of interpreters who were qualified for the event than Akamai would have done using a traditional set-up. This is because the interpreters' distance from the venue was no longer relevant.

The Outcome

The congress ran with one hundred percent uptime. Interpreters sourced by language service provider, Interprenet, worked remotely while remote support was provided by Interprefy's technical support team.

The audience provided extremely positive feedback, while Akamai saved 30% in financial outgoings when compared to a traditional set-up. The Akamai team has already committed to use Interprefy in the future.
