The International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication is a membership organization working to improve the lives of children and adults with complex communication needs. The primary aim of ISAAC is to create worldwide awareness about how augmentative and alternative communication can help individuals without speech. The organization was holding a conference on the Gold Coast, Australia, with a plenary and several breakout sessions.
The conference was spread over six days. This meant the prospect of flying in interpreters and covering their accommodation was financially unviable for ISAAC. In the past, the organization had used a different remote simultaneous interpreting provider, but was not pleased with the result. The organization approached Interpefy for a proposed solution. Because the event consisted of a main plenary and break-out sessions, there was some added complexity and the customer felt there would be significant savings in logistics, administration and money if RSI was used instead of a traditional set-up.
Interprefy was able to quickly identify that the interpreting audio stream should be delivered through the Interprefy app, giving those delegates who require interpreting a cutting edge and easy to use solution. The alternative would have been to provision every attendee with traditional radio headsets, but this was not necessary given that a minority of people required the interpreting service.
The interpreters were based remotely and provided conference-level interpreting throughout the sessions.
